GROUP ASSIGNMENT (40%) – SDG-THEMED ABSTRACT MOTION GRAPHICS
Empowering UUM Students with
Youth Speak Forum
1.0 Project Plan
1.1 SDG Focus: SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth
- Relevant SDG Targets:
- Target 8.6: By 2020, substantially reduce the proportion of youth not in employment, education, or training.
- Target 8.5: Achieve full and productive employment and decent work for all, including young people.
The project aims to support UUM students in their transition from academic life to the workforce, reducing youth unemployment and fostering economic growth by enhancing their skill sets. The reason we proposed to focus on SDG 8 is that we found fresh graduates in Malaysia often encounter internal challenges that hinder their employment prospects. Based on recent research, three primary issues were identified:
Inadequate Resume Writing Skills
Many graduates struggle to craft effective resumes that highlight their skills and experiences, leading to missed job opportunities. JobStreet emphasises the importance of resume writing skills, noting that most fresh graduates are not equipped to craft a decent resume (JobStreet).Poor Communication Skills
Effective communication is crucial in the workplace, yet some graduates lack proficiency, particularly in English, which affects their employability. Studies show that the lack of employability skills, especially communication skills, causes graduates to struggle to meet work demands and professional expectations (Academia).Limited Interview Preparation
Graduates often attend interviews without adequate preparation, which results in poor performance during the selection process. JobStreet advises that first-time interviewees should conduct research and prepare thoroughly to avoid appearing unprepared before interviewers (JobStreet).
Addressing these internal factors through targeted training and self-improvement can significantly enhance the employability of fresh graduates in Malaysia, which is why focusing on SDG 8 is essential for promoting decent work and economic growth.
1.2 Project Objectives
- Enhance employability by addressing key challenges faced by UUM students nearing graduation.
- Offer skill development workshops that focus on resume writing, communication, and interview preparation.
- Provide continuous support through peer and mentor networks.
- Use social media platforms to engage and raise awareness about employability challenges and opportunities.
1.3 Target Group

3.0 Technical Progress
3.1 Scene 1: Opening Scene
Scene 1 in Adobe After Effect
To begin, select a vibrant blue colour, such as #0177D3, as the background for the motion graphic. This colour aligns with the official branding of SDG 8 and helps create a visually appealing canvas. For added depth, you may incorporate a gradient effect to make the background dynamic and engaging. Next, design the slot machine’s frame using the Ellipse Tool and Rectangle Tool in Adobe After Effects. The Ellipse Tool can be utilized to create circular elements, such as buttons or dials on the sides, while the Rectangle Tool is ideal for crafting the main boxes that house the spinning reels. Adjust the layers carefully to ensure the frame looks polished and cohesive.Once the frame is ready, download the official SDG logos, including SDG 8, from the United Nations website to maintain authenticity. Insert the logos into the designated compartments of the slot machine, resizing them as needed to fit neatly within the slots. To create a seamless spinning effect, apply the Motion Tile effect by navigating to Effects & Presets > Motion Tile. Adjust the Output Width and Height to fit the composition and enable the "Mirror Edges" option to remove any visible seams, ensuring the animation flows smoothly.
To control the spin and emphasize the final reveal, use keyframes to slow down the spinning motion at the desired point. Open the Graph Editor to create a smooth deceleration curve, which gives the stopping effect a natural and realistic feel. Conclude the animation by halting the spin on the SDG 8 logo, highlighting it as the final focus of the slot machine sequence.
Scene 1 in Canva
3.5 Scene 7 - Inadequate Resuming Writing Skill
3.6 Scene 8 - Communication Skills
3.7 Scene 9 - Interview Preparation
The same goes for scene 9, I put the same background in scene 9 in this scene. Then, I put the element that suits this storyline which is "Limited Interview preparation" such as a man struggling to study for the interview but still not having enough time which leads him to not answer the interview well in front of the interviewer. I also put some additional elements such as a watch, X symbols, and face symbols and animated all of them. Then, it follows with the transition of typography "Limited Interview Preparation?" for the ending.
3.8 Scene 10
In this scene, I began by selecting a suitable background image from Pinterest that complemented them. After importing the background into Canva, I added the text "DON’T WORRY" using the Aerospace Bold font an to enhance visibility and depth, I applied a shadow effect, making the text stand out against the background. Next, I duplicated the text multiple times and carefully aligned each copy to fill the entire screen, ensuring a structured layout. After finalizing the text arrangement, I applied the Burst animation, which introduces the text with an energetic motion.
3.9 Scene 11
To design this scene, I first added a text overlay with the phrase "YOUTH SPEAK FORUM" using Canva’s Aerospace Bold font. To enhance its visual impact, I applied the Burst animation, making the text appear dynamically on the screen. Next, I incorporated various design elements from Canva like frames to embed a video and an illustrated boy on the left side. To add movement and make the design more interactive, I manually created a custom animation for the boy. This involved adjusting the movement path, speed, and effects, ensuring that the character moved naturally within the scene.
3.10 Scene 12,13,14
For scenes 12, 13, and 14, I used the same design layout for consistency, with the only difference being the videos, which were recordings from the forum activities. I started with a clear blue background to maintain a clean and professional look. Then, I selected a designed frame from Canva and placed it at the centre of the design, ensuring proper alignment for embedding the video. To enhance the visual appeal, I added various Canva elements and carefully arranged them around the frame. I manually positioned them along the edges and background to avoid a cluttered appearance. To maintain a neat composition, I placed these elements in the back layer of the frame, ensuring the video remained the focal point. Finally, I added a text overlay to explain the key activities in each scene. I used the League Spartan font and applied the Ascend animation, making the text appear smoothly.
3.11 Scene 15
For the last scene of the video, I used the same background as Scene 10 to maintain visual consistency, especially since this scene focuses on typography motion. Next, I added the text with different font styles. For the phrase "What are you", I creatively selected individual letter elements for each key letter, such as W, A, and T, to give a unique. This approach added variety and made the typography more visually interesting. For "waiting for", I used the Bright Sight font and applied the Bounce animation, making the text appear energetic. Next, for the phrase "Let’s invest yourself", I applied the Typewriter animation, creating a smooth and engaging text effect that mimicked real-time typing. Finally, to encourage audience participation, I added a "Register Now" element from Canva, ensuring it stood out as a clear call to action. This final touch effectively invited viewers to take action and engage with the message of the video.
3.12 Audio
For the audio, we have decided to incorporate background music, sound effects, and voiceover. The background music and sound effects were taken from Pixabay, and the voiceover was done by one of our groupmates, Benita.
Background Music:
We decided to go for an upbeat and motivational-themed background music. Upon searching for them in Pixabay, we decided on these three options.

4.0 Reflection
Reflection on the Motion Graphic Creation Process
Creating the motion graphic video for this project was both a challenging and rewarding experience. One of the initial difficulties we faced was distributing tasks among team members. It was crucial to ensure consistency in the design style and messaging across different scenes, but aligning everyone’s contributions required extra effort. Communication was key, as we had to constantly update one another on progress and make sure our individual work blended seamlessly into the final product. This challenge taught us the importance of effective collaboration and maintaining a shared vision throughout the process.
Another significant hurdle was the technical aspect of the project. Our team did not have access to high-spec laptops capable of running Adobe software smoothly, which limited our ability to use advanced tools like Adobe After Effects for the entire video. As a result, we relied heavily on Canva for most of the scenes, which, while user-friendly, also posed limitations in terms of animation flexibility and customization. However, for the opening scene—a 5-second slot machine animation—we decided to use Adobe After Effects to make it more dynamic and attention-grabbing.
The process of creating this short animation was far from easy. It took us 2-3 hours to complete, as we had to follow a YouTube tutorial that didn’t align perfectly with the layout of our laptops. This meant we had to spend additional time exploring and experimenting with the software to achieve the desired effect. Although frustrating at times, this challenge pushed us to become more resourceful and improved our problem-solving skills.
Overall, this experience highlighted the importance of adaptability and perseverance in creative projects. Despite the challenges, we successfully combined our efforts to produce a cohesive and engaging motion graphic video, which we are proud of. This journey also underscored the value of teamwork and leveraging available resources effectively, even when faced with technical and logistical constraints.
